The cetane number, or cetane rating, indicates how readily diesel fuel ignites under compression and how fast it burns once ignited, playing the same role for diesel that octane rating plays for gasoline. It is one important factor in judging diesel fuel quality, alongside others such as energy content, density, lubricity, cold flow behavior and sulfur content.
