Energy development

Systems Concept

Energy development is the field of activity concerned with obtaining energy from natural resources, covering the production of energy from fossil fuels, nuclear power and renewable sources as well as the recovery and reuse of energy that would otherwise be wasted. Energy conservation and efficiency measures can reduce how much new energy development is needed while also bringing environmental benefits. Energy resources are classed as primary, usable in essentially their original form, or secondary, requiring conversion into a more usable form, and separately as renewable, replenished by ongoing natural processes on human timescales, or non-renewable, depleted faster than they can be replaced within a human lifetime; the sector employs large numbers of people worldwide across traditional industries such as petroleum, natural gas and nuclear power and emerging industries built around renewable energy.
