A DC motor is an electric motor that uses direct current to produce mechanical force, most commonly relying on magnetic forces generated by current flowing through coils. Nearly all types of DC motor include some internal mechanism, either electromechanical or electronic, to periodically reverse the direction of current in part of the motor so that it keeps turning in one direction. The term covers a wide family of designs, from small brushed motors with a mechanical commutator to electronically commutated brushless variants.
