A servomotor is a rotary or linear actuator that allows precise control of angular or linear position, velocity and acceleration within a mechanical system. It forms part of a servomechanism, pairing a motor with a position sensor and a controller that closes a feedback loop: the sensor reports the current position, the controller compares it against the commanded target and generates an error signal that drives the motor toward that target, and more sophisticated designs use absolute encoders and variable-speed drives with proportional-integral-derivative control for faster, more precise positioning with less overshoot. Servomotors are used extensively in robotics, computer numerical control machinery and other automated manufacturing systems where high-performance motion control matters.
