A wound-rotor motor, also called a slip-ring rotor motor, is a type of induction motor whose rotor windings connect through slip rings to external resistance rather than being short-circuited as in a squirrel-cage design. Because its rotor has more winding turns, the induced voltage is higher and the current lower than in a squirrel-cage rotor, and varying the external resistance allows adjustable speed and torque control that a fixed squirrel-cage motor cannot provide. Wound-rotor motors also deliver stronger starting torque with lower inrush current, which makes them well suited to heavy-duty applications such as cranes and elevators.
