Charles Merz was a British electrical engineer who pioneered the use of high voltage three phase alternating current power distribution in the United Kingdom. In the early twentieth century he built a power distribution system across the North East of England that became the model the country followed in building its National Grid. His engineering approach to linking generation and distribution across a wide region helped establish the template for large scale, interconnected electricity networks in Britain.
