Emile Garcke

Emile Oscar Garcke was a naturalized British electrical engineer and industrial administrator who helped organize the country's early electricity supply and tramway businesses. Born in the Kingdom of Saxony in 1856, he emigrated to Britain and became a citizen in 1880. Garcke served as secretary of the Brush Electric Light Corporation from 1883 and manager of the Brush Electrical Engineering Company from 1887, before becoming managing director of the British Electric Traction Company in 1896, which grew into the largest private owner of tramways in the British Isles. He wrote on electricity for the 1911 edition of the Encyclopaedia Britannica and edited the Manual of Electrical Undertakings, an industry reference work, from 1897 until his retirement in 1929. Garcke died in 1930.
