A unitized regenerative fuel cell, or URFC, is a proton exchange membrane device that can run in either of two directions using the very same fuel cell stack: in regenerative mode it electrolyzes water into hydrogen and oxygen, and in fuel cell mode it recombines that hydrogen and oxygen to produce electricity. Combining both functions into one stack distinguishes it from a regenerative fuel cell system built from two separate devices, an electrolyzer and a fuel cell, operating side by side.
