A particulate air filter is a device made of fibrous or porous material that removes particulates such as smoke, dust, pollen, mold, viruses and bacteria from the air, and some also remove odors and gaseous pollutants when they contain an adsorbent or catalyst such as charcoal. Air filters are used wherever air quality matters, including building ventilation systems, engine and gas turbine compressor intakes, vehicle and aircraft cabins, and enclosed human-made environments such as spacecraft. They are typically constructed of foam, pleated paper, cotton or spun fiberglass, with oil bath filters largely fallen out of favor outside niche uses.
