Alkaline Battery

An alkaline battery is a disposable primary battery that generates current from a chemical reaction between zinc and manganese dioxide, using an electrolyte of potassium hydroxide, an alkaline solution with a pH above 7, that is not consumed as the cell discharges. Zinc at the negative electrode oxidizes while manganese dioxide at the positive electrode is reduced, producing a nominal 1.5 volts, and the design offers a higher energy density and longer shelf life than the older zinc-carbon batteries it largely replaced. The modern alkaline battery grew out of research by Waldemar Jungner in 1899 and Thomas Edison in 1901, but its familiar form came from Canadian engineer Lewis Urry's work at Union Carbide's Eveready division in the 1950s, patented in 1957, and it remains the standard power source for household devices such as flashlights, remote controls and portable radios.
