A battery management system, or BMS, is an electronic system that manages a rechargeable battery, whether a single cell or a full battery pack, to keep it safe and extend its working life while monitoring and estimating states such as its state of health and state of charge, calculating and reporting secondary data, controlling its environment, and authenticating or balancing it. A simpler alternative for basic protection is a protection circuit module. A battery pack built together with a BMS that includes an external communication data bus is called a smart battery pack, and such a pack must be charged by a smart battery charger.
