Seasonal Thermal Energy Storage

Seasonal thermal energy storage, or STES, also called inter-seasonal thermal energy storage, is the storage of heat or cold for periods of up to several months, so that thermal energy collected or produced in one season can be used in an opposing season, such as summer heat stored for winter heating or winter cold stored for summer cooling. Waste heat from industrial processes and air conditioning systems can also be captured this way and used much later. STES systems serve both district heating networks and individual buildings, with design temperatures for heating applications typically running from about 27 to 80 degrees Celsius.
