A steam accumulator is an insulated steel pressure tank containing hot water and steam held under pressure, used as a form of energy storage to smooth out peaks and troughs in demand for steam drawn from a boiler or other heat source. Steam accumulators have taken on renewed significance for energy storage in solar thermal power projects, where the sun heat is not always available exactly when steam is needed; the PS10 solar power plant near Seville, Spain uses one, and a steam accumulator has also been planned for a solar steam train project in Sacramento, California.
