Vanadium Redox Battery

Energy Storage

The vanadium redox battery, also called the vanadium flow battery or vanadium redox flow battery, is a type of rechargeable flow battery that uses vanadium ions dissolved in solution as its charge carriers, exploiting vanadium ability to exist in four different oxidation states to build a battery around a single electroactive element rather than the two different elements most battery chemistries require. Because of their relative bulk and the tankage a flow battery needs for its liquid electrolyte, vanadium redox batteries are typically deployed for grid energy storage, attached directly to power plants or electrical grids rather than built into compact portable devices, and numerous companies and research organizations are involved in funding and developing the technology further.
