The ZEBRA battery is a rechargeable molten salt battery built from commonly available, low-cost materials: nickel metal, sodium and chloride from ordinary table salt, and a beta-alumina solid electrolyte. It is technically known as the sodium-nickel-chloride battery, and is also sometimes called a sodium-metal-halide battery. Its common name comes from the Zeolite Battery Research Africa project that developed it, begun in South Africa in 1985.
