Zinc-Bromine Battery

Energy Storage

A zinc-bromine battery is a rechargeable battery system that generates electric current from the reaction between zinc metal and bromine, using an aqueous electrolyte solution of zinc bromide. It uses zinc as its negative electrode because the metal is widely available, low in cost, and stable in neutral and alkaline aqueous environments, the same properties that already make it a common choice in zinc-carbon and alkaline primary batteries. The technology primary application is stationary energy storage, for electrical grids, residential systems or isolated power installations rather than portable devices, and a key advantage it offers over lithium-ion systems is that its aqueous electrolyte substantially reduces the risk of overheating and fire.
