The Scottish engineer whose separate condenser, patented in 1769, transformed the steam engine from a mine pump into the universal power source of the Industrial Revolution. With Matthew Boulton he built the engines that drove British industry, he coined horsepower to sell them, and the metric unit of power bears his name.
