Belo Monte Dam

Hydroelectric Facility

Belo Monte Dam is a hydroelectric complex on the Xingu River in Para State, Brazil, built by the Norte Energia consortium and commissioned in November 2019. With an installed capacity of about 11,233 megawatts it is the second largest hydroelectric complex in Brazil and the fifth largest in the world, behind China's Three Gorges, Baihetan and Xiluodu dams and Brazil and Paraguay's Itaipu Dam. The project drew sustained opposition over its impact on the Xingu's indigenous and riverine communities and on fish species endemic to the Volta Grande stretch of the river, and cost an estimated eighteen and a half billion dollars to build.
