Magnetized liner inertial fusion, or MagLIF, is an ongoing Z-pinch fusion power experiment carried out on the Z Pulsed Power Facility, the Z machine, at Sandia National Laboratories in New Mexico. The process applies an axial magnetic field of 10 to 20 tesla to deuterium fusion fuel, uses a multi-kilojoule laser to preheat that fuel into plasma at several million degrees Celsius, and then drives a 100-nanosecond electric current pulse that creates an intense Z-pinch magnetic field, compressing the fuel to tens of millions of degrees while amplifying the magnetic field to thousands of tesla and confining the plasma long enough for fusion to occur. Sandia is pursuing upgrades, including a 30-tesla magnetic field and an 8-kilojoule laser, aimed at reaching energy breakeven.
