Solar augmented geothermal energy, or SAGE, is a method of geothermal energy production that creates a synthetic geothermal storage resource by heating a natural underground brine with solar energy, adding enough heat while the sun shines to let the resource generate power around the clock. By injecting solar-heated fluid into a subsurface reservoir, SAGE aims to make geothermal wells or abandoned oil and gas fields that would otherwise be too cool to use productive again, pairing solar collection with the storage and dispatchability of a geothermal resource.
