Absorption Heat Pump

Heating and Cooling

An absorption heat pump, or AHP, is a heat pump powered by a thermal energy source, such as burning natural gas, solar-heated water or geothermal water, rather than by the mechanical energy that drives a compression heat pump. Because it relies on thermal energy rather than a mechanical compressor, its electricity demand is limited to pumping liquid and running fans, far below that of a compression heat pump, though it is structurally more complex and requires larger equipment. Absorption heat pumps are most practical where electricity is very expensive or a large amount of unused heat at a suitable temperature is already available.
