A solid oxide electrolyzer cell is a solid oxide fuel cell run in reverse, or regenerative, mode to electrolyze water using a solid oxide, or ceramic, electrolyte, producing hydrogen gas and oxygen. The resulting hydrogen is a clean, storable fuel and a possible alternative to batteries, methane and other energy sources, and electrolysis is currently considered the most promising way to produce hydrogen from water because of its high conversion efficiency and comparatively low required energy input next to thermochemical and photocatalytic methods.
