Point Absorber

Marine Conversion

A point absorber is a type of wave energy converter that floats on the surface of the sea, held in place by cables anchored to the seabed, and generates electricity from the rise and fall of passing swells. As waves lift and lower the buoy, its motion drives a linear generator, a mechanical linear to rotary converter, or a hydraulic pump to produce power, and some designs absorb energy by radiating a wave that destructively interferes with the incoming waves. The Swedish company CorPower has built a point absorber design that uses a negative spring to improve performance and protect the buoy in large waves, reporting a roughly threefold increase in power output through phase control adjustments tested in 2024.
