Wave Motor

Marine Conversion

Wave motors were machines designed and built in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries to harness the power of wave or tidal energy, with many experiments planned or built in California using a variety of methods. The earliest wave motors were not built to generate electricity; before 1880 they were designed to run non-electrically, powering vehicles or mills directly. They represent an early, largely abandoned approach to capturing ocean energy that predates the electrical generation methods used by modern wave and tidal devices.
