Pumped Storage Hydropower

Also Known As Pumped Hydro Storage
Energy Storage

An energy storage method that pumps water uphill to a reservoir when electricity is cheap or abundant and releases it back through turbines when it is needed. Pumped storage holds the large majority of all utility-scale stored electricity in the world, a position it has kept for a century even as battery storage grows quickly.

ESSs are not primary electricity generation sources. They must use electricity supplied by separate electricity generators or from an electric power grid to charge the storage system, which makes ESSs secondary generation sources.
