Nuclear Pioneers

William Liscum Borden, February 6, 1920 to October 8, 1985, was an American lawyer who served as executive director of the United States Congress Joint Committee on Atomic Energy from 1949 to 1953, a position from which he became one of the most influential advocates for nuclear weapons development inside the federal government. He is best remembered for a letter to FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover alleging that physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer was more probably than not a Soviet agent, an accusation that helped trigger the 1954 Oppenheimer security hearing. Borden earned both his undergraduate and law degrees from Yale University.
