The Economic Simplified Boiling Water Reactor, or ESBWR, is a passively safe Generation III+ boiling water reactor design from GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy. It descends from two earlier boiling water reactor designs by the same company, the Simplified Boiling Water Reactor and the Advanced Boiling Water Reactor, and like them it generates electricity by boiling water directly within the reactor vessel to drive a steam turbine. The ESBWR's passive safety systems are intended to keep the reactor core cooled during an accident using natural forces such as gravity and convection rather than powered pumps.
