The gas-cooled fast reactor, or GFR, is one of six Generation IV reactor concepts. It features a fast-neutron spectrum and a closed fuel cycle, cooled by helium at an outlet temperature of approximately 850 degrees Celsius, in contrast to existing thermal-spectrum gas-cooled reactor designs. Its fast-neutron spectrum allows it to be configured to make more efficient use of uranium resources than a conventional thermal reactor.
