Mechanical efficiency is a dimensionless ratio, in mechanical engineering, that measures how effectively a mechanism or machine turns power input into power output, expressed as output divided by input and always between 0 and 1. Because energy is conserved, no machine can produce more power than it receives, and because real machines lose some energy to friction as heat, their actual efficiency is always less than 1; only an idealized, frictionless machine would reach a perfect efficiency of 1, or 100 percent.
