Coal Pioneers

Matías Cousiño Jorquera, 1810 to 1863, was a Chilean coal-mining magnate and patriarch of the wealthy Cousiño family. His principal enterprise was developing coal operations at Lota on Chile's coast, which became a key resupply point where steamships crossing the Strait of Magellan could take on coal, making Lota one of the most important coal-mining centers in nineteenth-century South America.
