Julius Pintsch was a German engineer and industrialist who developed a practical process for manufacturing oil gas that could be compressed and stored safely in cylinders, marketed under his own name as Pintsch gas. The company he founded in Berlin supplied compressed gas lighting systems that illuminated railway carriages, ships and navigational buoys across Europe for decades, and Pintsch gas remained a significant portable lighting fuel until electric lighting displaced it in the twentieth century.
