Research and Experimental Facility

Large-scale facilities built to research or demonstrate an energy technology not yet in commercial generating service, including ITER, the largest fusion experiment ever undertaken, and the National Ignition Facility, a laser fusion research facility at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Belongs here: a facility whose purpose is research or experimental demonstration rather than commercial power supply. Does not belong here: a commercially operating nuclear fission plant, grouped under Nuclear Facility even where its own history began as a demonstration project.
