Hybrid Solar Lighting

Hybrid solar lighting is a system for lighting building interiors that combines captured natural sunlight with artificial light, channeling sunlight through bundles of fiber optic cable. Rooftop mounted, mirrored dishes track the sun and collect its light, which travels through the fiber bundles to light fixtures fitted with diffusing rods that spread the sunlight through a room, and photosensors bring in supplementary artificial light, typically LED, as the available sunlight fades, so the room overall light level stays roughly constant through the day. The approach lets a building light interior rooms that have no windows or skylights while cutting electricity use by drawing on natural light before switching to electrical lighting.
