A photovoltaic thermal hybrid solar collector, commonly abbreviated PVT, is a technology that converts sunlight into both usable electricity and usable heat from a single component, also called a hybrid solar collector or a solar cogeneration system. It combines photovoltaic solar cells, which generate electricity, with a solar thermal collector, which captures the heat that would otherwise be wasted from the photovoltaic module and transfers it to a heat transfer fluid. Because it produces both electricity and heat from the same footprint, a PVT collector can reach a higher overall efficiency than a photovoltaic-only or thermal-only solar collector.
