A solar-powered pump runs on electricity generated by photovoltaic panels, or on the thermal energy gathered from collected sunlight, rather than on grid electricity or a diesel engine. It typically consists of a solar panel array, a solar charge controller, a direct current water pump, wiring and fuses, and a storage tank. Because it carries lower operating and maintenance costs and a smaller environmental footprint than a pump run by an internal combustion engine, it is especially useful where grid electricity is unavailable or impractical and no other power source can supply enough energy.
