Cadmium telluride photovoltaics, or CdTe, is a photovoltaic technology based on using cadmium telluride in a thin semiconductor layer designed to absorb sunlight and convert it into electricity. Cadmium telluride is the only thin-film technology with lower costs than conventional solar cells made of crystalline silicon in multi-kilowatt systems, and it has the smallest carbon footprint, the lowest water use and the shortest energy payback time of any current photovoltaic technology, with an energy payback period of less than one year.
