Atomic Energy of Canada Limited, known as AECL, is a Canadian Crown corporation and the largest nuclear science and technology laboratory in Canada. It developed the CANDU reactor technology starting in the 1950s and, until October 2011, was also the vendor of that technology, which it marketed and built in India, South Korea, Argentina, Romania and the People's Republic of China from the 1960s to the 2000s. In October 2011 it licensed the technology to Candu Energy. AECL also manufactures nuclear medicine radioisotopes, supplying molybdenum-99 for diagnostic tests and cobalt-60 for cancer therapy, and it is funded by federal appropriations and commercial revenue.
