A gas detector is a device that detects the presence of gases in a volume of space, often as part of a safety system, and that can sound an alarm to warn operators of a leak so they have the chance to leave the area. Gas detectors are used to detect combustible, flammable and toxic gases as well as oxygen depletion, and are found widely in industry, including on oil rigs, in refineries and in monitoring emerging technologies such as photovoltaic manufacturing. Common sensor types include combustible gas sensors, photoionization detectors, infrared point sensors, ultrasonic sensors, electrochemical gas sensors and metal-oxide-semiconductor sensors, alongside more recently developed infrared imaging sensors.
