A load break switch is a switching device built to open and close an electrical circuit while it is carrying its normal operating current, which distinguishes it from a plain disconnector that can only be operated safely once a circuit is already de-energized. It is not designed to interrupt a fault current the way a circuit breaker is, so utilities use it for routine switching, sectioning and maintenance isolation on distribution networks rather than for fault protection. Load break switches are commonly built into ring main units and other distribution switchgear and can be operated manually or by remote control.
