Metal-Air Electrochemical Cell

Electrochemical Converter

A metal-air electrochemical cell is built from an anode of pure metal and an external cathode of ambient air, typically paired with an aqueous or aprotic electrolyte. It generates power through the electrochemical oxidation of the metal at the anode and the reduction of oxygen drawn from the air at the cathode. Because the cathode's active material, oxygen, is drawn from the surrounding air rather than stored inside the cell, a metal-air battery has a much higher theoretical specific energy than a conventional lithium-ion battery and can approach the energy density of gasoline.
