A thermoelectric heat pump uses the thermoelectric effect, specifically the Peltier effect, to heat or cool materials by applying an electrical current across them. It is a solid-state active heat pump that transfers heat from one side of the device to the other, consuming electrical energy, with the direction of heat flow set by the direction of the current, so it can be used for either heating or cooling. The device is also known as a Peltier cooler, Peltier heater, Peltier device, solid state refrigerator, thermoelectric cooler or, occasionally, thermoelectric battery.
