Edward Teller

Nuclear Pioneers

Edward Teller was a Hungarian-American theoretical physicist known as the father of the hydrogen bomb for his central role in designing the first thermonuclear weapon, tested at Ivy Mike in 1952 using the Teller-Ulam design he developed with mathematician Stanislaw Ulam. A member of the original Manhattan Project team at Los Alamos, Teller pushed for continued development of fusion weapons after the war and later became a leading advocate for nuclear power and for civilian uses of nuclear explosives, co-founding the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in 1952. His 1954 testimony against Oppenheimer's security clearance made him a divisive figure within the physics community for decades afterward.
