Fritz Marguerre is the inventor credited with patenting the concept of the Carnot battery about a century before the technology was revitalized. A Carnot battery is an energy storage system that stores electricity as thermal energy: during charging the electricity is converted into heat and kept in heat storage, and during discharging the stored heat is converted back into electricity, which is why the technology is also known as power-to-heat-to-power. Interest returned because of the increased use of variable renewable energy and the need to increase the total recovered energy delivered from such sources, and the discharge efficiency of a Carnot battery is limited by the Carnot efficiency.
