Biohybrid Solar Cell

Solar Conversion

A biohybrid solar cell is a solar cell made using a combination of organic matter, specifically photosystem I, and inorganic matter. Biohybrid solar cells have been produced by a team of researchers at Vanderbilt University, who used photosystem I, a photoactive protein complex located in the thylakoid membrane of plant cells, to recreate the natural process of photosynthesis in pursuit of greater efficiency in converting sunlight into electricity. These biohybrid solar cells represent a new, experimental type of renewable energy technology that fuses biological photosynthetic machinery with conventional solar cell engineering.
