Shunt Reactor

Grid Equipment

A shunt reactor is a large inductor installed at an electrical substation to counteract the effect of transmission line parasitic capacitance, stabilizing system voltage within acceptable limits. Overhead power lines create capacitive effects that can cause voltage to rise excessively over long distances, and by consuming excess reactive power during light-load conditions, shunt reactors prevent problems such as over-fluxing of transformers and overstressing of line insulators. Shunt reactors can be either permanently connected or switched in and out based on system demands, and newer variable shunt reactors offer continuous adjustment for improved voltage regulation.
