A membrane electrode assembly, or MEA, is the assembled stack of a proton-exchange membrane or alkali anion exchange membrane, a catalyst layer and flat plate electrodes that forms the core working component of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell or an electrolyzer. It brings the membrane, catalyst and electrodes together into a single manufactured unit rather than separate parts assembled at the point of use, and its design and materials are a central factor in how efficiently and durably the finished fuel cell or electrolyzer performs.
