Sorption Enhanced Water Gas Shift

Hydrogen Production

Sorption enhanced water gas shift, or SEWGS, is a technology that combines a pre combustion carbon capture process with the water gas shift reaction to produce a hydrogen rich stream from the syngas fed into a SEWGS reactor. The water gas shift reaction converts carbon monoxide into carbon dioxide, and in SEWGS that carbon dioxide is captured and removed through an adsorption process as it forms. This in situ carbon dioxide adsorption and removal pushes the water gas shift reaction toward completion, converting the carbon monoxide fully and maximizing the production of high pressure hydrogen. The technology has drawn growing attention since the early 2010s, showing advantages over conventional carbon capture technologies.
