A distribution management system, or DMS, is a collection of software applications used to monitor and control an electric power distribution network efficiently and reliably. It acts as a decision support system, assisting control room staff and field operating personnel with monitoring and controlling the distribution system, with the goal of improving reliability and service quality by reducing power outages, minimizing outage duration and maintaining acceptable voltage and frequency levels. Because distribution grids are complex, a DMS often coordinates communication across many components and systems rather than working as a single stand-alone tool. The need for such systems has grown as electricity use has increased and customer expectations around reliable, real-time management of the distribution network have risen.
