In electric power distribution, a busbar is a metallic strip or bar, typically housed inside switchgear, panel boards and busway enclosures, used for local high-current power distribution. It is usually uninsulated and is held in place by insulated pillars that allow it to be air-cooled, and beyond switchgear and panel boards it is also used in electrical switchyards and battery banks. A busbar can be tapped at multiple points along its length without creating a new joint, which is one of its practical advantages over an equivalent cable.
