Grid Parity

Also Known As Socket Parity
Economic Measure

Grid parity is the point at which an alternative energy source can generate electricity at a levelized cost equal to or below the price of power bought from the grid, without subsidy. Germany reached grid parity for utility-scale solar photovoltaics in 2011 and for rooftop solar PV in 2012, and wind power reached grid parity in parts of Europe by the mid-2000s. By early 2014 unsubsidized solar PV had reached grid parity in at least nineteen countries.

Grid parity is defined directly in terms of levelized cost of electricity.

Solar photovoltaics is the most frequently cited example of a technology that has reached grid parity in multiple markets.

  • Definition, Early Achievements
Grid parity (or socket parity) occurs when an alternative energy source can generate power at a levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) that is less than or equal to the price of power from the electricity grid.
  • Early Achievements, Germany
Germany was one of the first countries to reach parity for solar PV in 2011 and 2012 for utility-scale solar and rooftop solar PV, respectively.
